Shake-a-Face

Puzzles in the movies III

The outline of the nose and mouth is created by a stretch of thin loose chain attached to the drawing's eyebrow and chin. Shaking the card slightly, one attempts to fashion that chain into a reasonable facsimile of a face.

My picture is from The Maltese Falcon (1931), wherein Sam Spade is shown playing with this card for about 25 seconds. His romantic interest, Ruth Wonderly, is nearby — cheating at solitaire. He looks at her, then plays with the puzzle, then looks at her again and lowers his brows — as if to say: You resemble this game. Deftly done!
