Ridley Scott's epic Kingdom of Heaven (2005) is set in the 12th century: Baldwin was king of Jerusalem 1174 - 1185. The modern-chess precursor, shatranj, had — by the year 1000 — spread throughout Europe, so it would have been natural for King Baldwin to enquire of our hero protagonist: "D' you play?" He continues: "The whole world is in chess. Any move can be the death of you."
