The Chess Cheat
The Chess Cheat
Chess in the movies I
Six years ago, I started grabbing chess stills from any of my purchased DVDs that might contain them. For example, I took nine screen-shots from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1947 The Paradine Case (chapter 7), wherein a close examination shows that Sir Simon Flaquer, played by Charles Coburn, makes a two moves on the board without an intervening move by his opponent, Judy Flaquer (Simon’s daughter), played by Joan Tetzel.
I’m sure this was just an editing mistake (it’s easy to miss). However, in presenting the series of pictures, I provided captions that pretend the double-move was intentional: Sir Simon Flaquer was cheating! His daughter catches on to the ruse but allows him to save face... Here is my version of the chess scene from The Paradine Case. Anything in quotation marks is actual dialogue from the film.
