Here we go...
This is another one of Winsor McCay’s sermons in ink. The point of using rabbits to caricature these people is not at all obvious to me. Perhaps the “poor rabbits” are the same ones that a sentimental soul might encounter in some marketplace: alive, but slated for the dinner-table.
The vehicle in which we find these rabbit-people is not exactly a handcart but there is no doubt in my mind that the phrase “going to hell in a handcart” (alternatively “going to hell in a handbasket”, well-known expressions of uncertain origin) is the operative principle in this drawing, captioned: Here we go — poor rabbits.
